See what’s inside: transparent, heat-sealable paper for food and non-food

Whether it’s a sandwich, soap, or a toy car, consumers are accustomed to being able to inspect a product through the packaging, or at least through a viewing window, before purchasing.

Therefore, delfort is launching thinwrap transparent gloss HS, a transparent paper. “It’s heat-sealable, recyclable, and certified for direct food contact,” says Peter Hackl, Head of Packaging at delfort. The new paper will be presented at Fachpack at the end of September.

“With our new thinwrap transparent gloss HS, you can now create viewing windows or even fully paper-based packaging without compromising protection, sealing performance, or product presentation,” says Hackl. A key technical feature is the fully coated surface with an A-A heat-sealable solution. This allows a single roll format to be used for different packaging sizes and types – both printed and unprinted.

“This simplifies operations,” says Hackl. Furthermore, the paper has a glossy surface and a good grip. It allows for high-quality printing using common printing processes such as flexographic and gravure. thinwrap transparent gloss HS is made from FSC- and/or PEFC-certified and controlled pulp. It contains no intentionally added PFAS and meets the requirements of the US FDA and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) for direct food contact.

Avery Dennison Launches Labeling Solutions at Labelexpo 2025

Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY) is proud to announce a series of product innovations that will launch at Labelexpo 2025, booth 3E61, beginning September 16 in Barcelona.

With labels and packaging at the forefront of enabling circularity and connectivity, Avery Dennison has pioneered innovations that enable organizations to boost packaging recycling and reuse, enhance packaging shelf appeal and improve functionality, performance and supply chain transparency.

At the show, Avery Dennison will spotlight its expanded AD CleanGlass™ wash-off portfolio with its recently launched white film option. Developed in response to growing demand for reusable glass packaging and meeting brand sustainability targets, the white film joins the well-established clear version. Both solutions allow easy and clean label removal from glass bottles in a conventional bottle washer at 80 degrees Celsius, optimizing the environmental benefits of reusable glass.

Avery Dennison will also showcase AD CleanFiber™, the first range of INGEDE12-certified paper label solutions with newly developed adhesive technology that cleanly screens out from pulp during the recycling screening process, resulting in higher quality output for new cardboard and paper production.

  • UPM and Royal Vaassen Develop Fibre-Based Packaging Alternative

UPM and Royal Vaassen Develop Fibre-Based Packaging Alternative

To meet the growing demand for recyclable packaging, Royal Vaassen, in collaboration with UPM Specialty Papers, has developed several recyclable and food-safe barrier paper solutions for a variety of end-use applications. The Barryrwrap concept by Royal Vaassen addresses packaging needs ranging from medium to the most demanding barrier requirements, including oxygen and moisture barrier properties.

With the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) recyclability requirements approaching, it is essential to find packaging solutions that are recyclable with widely available recycling infrastructures. Paper and board recycling infrastructures are widely present and established to support the future requirements.

“Our barrier papers are a sustainable alternative to laminates and plastics. They offer strong protection with a focus on performance and circularity and are suitable for existing production lines and products such as coffee, stock and chocolate”, explains Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager, Royal Vaassen.

“Barryrwrap Everest is our highest performing barrier paper, developed for instant coffee and other dry products that demand maximum protection. The material provides an excellent barrier against moisture, oxygen and light; printing is reproduced with exceptional clarity and it’s ready to seal on existing production lines. With its fully recyclable paper structure, Barryrwrap Everest is a sustainable and circular alternative to traditional aluminum laminates, without compromising on quality or processability”, he continues.

UPM SolideTM Lucent packaging paper offers a perfect base for Barryrwrap solutions. Easy to convert, it is extremely smooth and exceptionally dense. This minimizes the coat weights required, while at the same time offering the strength to perform efficiently on high-speed lines. Lighter or heavier grammage of UPM Solide Lucent can be selected based on the application requirement.

“We have tested Barryrwrap solutions in new, demanding applications for fibre-based and recyclable packaging, such as canister-type formats suitable for products like chips or drink powders. Sample canisters are available at the Fachpack trade fair in Nuremburg in September, where we invite everyone interested in Barryrwrap solutions and UPM Solide Lucent base paper to meet our experts”, says Mika Uusikartano, Senior Manager, Product Portfolio Management, UPM Specialty Papers.

  • Sappi expands recyclable, high-barrier paper portfolio for primary packaging

Sappi expands recyclable, high-barrier paper portfolio for primary packaging

Sappi Europe is strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable packaging with the launch of Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH. These two recyclables, mono-material papers, deliver high-barrier protection without compromising production efficiency. Designed to help brand owners meet tightening EU packaging regulations such as the PPWR, the new solutions offer a paper-based alternative to plastic and multilayer foils that is ready for today’s fast-paced manufacturing lines.

Guard Pro OHS is a heat-sealable, high-barrier paper designed for applications such as flow-wraps, sachets, and pouches. It offers strong protection against oxygen, water vapor, grease, and MOSH/MOAH. These barrier properties help extend shelf life, preserve aroma and product quality, and protect contents from contamination. The paper has enhanced mechanical properties, which lead to a better runnability on packaging machines.

The paper is available in two finishes: Natural (62, 72 and 92 g/m²), and Gloss (77, 87 and 102 g/m²). It is suitable for direct food contact and complies with toy safety standards, making it ideal for both food and non-food packaging that require secure seal integrity and safety assurance. Typical applications include snacks, dry foods, ice cream flow wrap, hygiene products, and children’s items, where safety, freshness, and compliance are key.

Guard Pro OMH offers the similar barrier properties as OHS but is designed for cold-seal applications. It’s a cost-effective solution for applications where heat sealing isn’t needed. With improved oxygen barrier compared to OHS, Guard Pro OMH fits a wide range of food and non-food uses. Because of the particularly smooth surface the paper offers excellent conversion results in metallization, making it ideal for metal deposition and further conversion to ultra-high barrier applications. The paper is available in an uncoated Natural version (60, 70 and 90 g/m²) and a Glossy (75, 85 and 100 g/m²) version.

The choice between Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH gives packaging engineers more control over sealing method, production speed, and material costs, without compromising recyclability or protection. “With Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH, we’re giving the market more flexibility and choice when selecting recyclable, high-barrier papers” – said Filip van Ranst, Sales Director at Sappi.
