Mercer Peace River Pulp and Svante Co₂ Capture Demonstration Unit

Mercer International Inc., a global forest products company with operations in Germany, the U.S., and Canada, announces that its subsidiary, Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd.

The Svante Technologies Inc. (Svante) have commenced operation of a previously announced carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture demonstration unit at the Mercer Peace River pulp mill in northern Alberta. The pilot project is designed to evaluate Svante’s solid sorbent carbon capture technology on biogenic CO₂ emissions from the mill’s recovery boiler flue gas.

This stage builds on the previously announced Front-End Engineering and Design Phase 2 (FEL-2 / pre-FEED). That phase evaluated design, site integration, cost and risk assessment, and options for potential future commercial-scale deployment at the mill. The anticipated 6-month demonstration is intended to generate the technical and operational data needed to support the next engineering phase and longer-term planning.

“Commissioning this demonstration unit is an important and cost-efficient step for our Peace River team. It allows us to evaluate carbon capture performance in our operating environment and gather practical data on what would be required for any future scale-up,” said Bill Adams, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President, Canadian Pulp Operations. Bill continued, “The results from this on-site demonstration will help us evaluate the decarbonization potential of this technology for biogenic emissions and inform longer-term planning across our pulp operations.”

“We are pleased to see this project advance into on-site demonstration operations,” said Scott Gardner, President of Svante Development Company, Svante’s project development business unit. “Testing our technology in an operating pulp mill environment is an important step in gathering the information needed to assess future opportunities for commercial-scale carbon capture in the wider pulp and paper industry.”

Any further advancement of the project beyond the demonstration phase will be dependent on a number of factors, including, among other things, the results of the demonstration and further other economic, technical and commercial considerations.

ANDRITZ starts up sludge drying plant at Eldorado Brasil Celulose

International technology group ANDRITZ, which supplied the technology and developed the new biological sludge drying plant for Eldorado Brasil Celulose’s pulp mill in Três Lagoas, Brazil, celebrated the plant’s successful start of operations.

This project represents another step forward in Eldorado’s strategies to transform waste into energy and enhance the environmental efficiency of its operations.

With the capacity to process up to 22 tons of dry solids per day, the plant was designed to dry the biological sludge generated from the industrial wastewater treatment process. After drying, the material is used as fuel in the mill’s power boiler, significantly reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills, benefiting the environment, and delivering substantial energy gains.

ANDRITZ’s scope of supply included sludge dewatering centrifuges, an aspiration air system, the complete drying process, dry product handling, exhaust gas condensation, as well as automatic and manual valves, instrumentation, steel structures, and platforms. ANDRITZ was also responsible for the basic and detailed engineering, along with technical support during installation, commissioning, and start-up.

At the heart of the plant is the ANDRITZ Gouda paddle dryer, type 17W300 – the largest model in the ANDRITZ portfolio. With its robust design and advanced technology, it ensures efficient drying with high operational safety, easy operation, and minimal maintenance requirements.

The successful start-up of this plant underscores ANDRITZ’s commitment to delivering high-performance technical solutions that meet the most demanding environmental standards. We are proud to support Eldorado in its journey toward more sustainable and efficient operations,” says Luiz Paulo, Senior Technical and Commercial Manager at ANDRITZ.

With this project, ANDRITZ further strengthens its position as a strategic partner offering complete, customized solutions for the pulp and paper industry. ANDRITZ has been the key supplier for Eldorado Brasil’s pulp mill.

  • HZ Green Pulp enters full-scale production

HZ Green Pulp enters full-scale production

HZ Green Pulp has begun full-scale commercial production of Dry Molded Fiber coffee lids in Malaysia, becoming the first PulPac licensee in Asia to supply the market with this fiber-based alternative to plastic.

The company, already established in wet-molded fiber, commissioned its first PulPac Modula machine earlier this year. With production now running at scale, HZ Green Pulp is ready to supply Dry Molded Fiber products to both local markets and multinational brands. Coffee lids are the first product, broadening the company’s current portfolio. Additional Dry Molded Fiber food-service applications are expected to follow.

“Our mission is to provide packaging solutions that are both responsible and cost-efficient,” said Dr. Donald Yap, CEO of HZ Green Pulp. “Our wet molding operations continue to serve customers well, but Dry Molded Fiber allows us to introduce a new generation of products that respond to evolving market demands while reducing environmental impact. We’re confident in the technology’s capability and its fit with our customers’ requirements.”

For PulPac, the move underscores the maturity and scalability of its technology. “Licensees moving from installation to commercial deliveries is a defining milestone,” said Sanna Fager, Chief Commercial Officer at PulPac. “Our licensing model provides a direct path to market, protected IP, standardized tooling and materials, and a partner network that has already solved the hard problems. It embeds world-leading know-how to shorten validation and de-risk scale-up, a proven route to commercial production, faster to shelves with experienced support from day one and beyond launch.”

Dry Molded Fiber — invented, patented, and licensed by PulPac — is an industrial fiber-forming technology for high-speed production of rigid packaging. The process uses minimal water and significantly less energy than traditional fiber molding, offering a cost-competitive, resource-efficient alternative to single-use plastics.
